It is common for people to think that with so much happening in the digital world, technology would have advanced so much that cyber crimes are issues of the past. In fact, with the internet getting faster, there are so many more cyber-criminals that are still carrying out massive frauds that have cost big money to businesses and consumers. Cyber security firms are trying very hard to combat these issues, but not everything they are doing is actually helping.
What everyone is actually missing out is that even practices like regularly updating your software and applications can keep security threats at bay. This is exactly what you need to understand, you can make a difference by being more vigilant and proactive when it comes to cyber security. Let us get you prepared:
- It is very difficult to prepare for something that you cannot exactly predict. While we all assume that all our businesses are protected using the antivirus and firewall applications, hackers may get into your system exactly before the update patches of these software applications rollout. This is known as “zero-day attacks”. Google has launched a new cyber security branch called the Chronicle which precisely detects these threats, and analyses them to provide with necessary steps to counter them.
- There is one more thing that is doing the rounds in the cyber crime branch – identity theft. With almost everyone using internet to do business, connect with people or make payments, hackers have found numerous ways to steal sensitive personal information through phishing or card skimming. Identity theft can be prevented through a self sovereign identity – something like a blockchain network (for example Decentralised.id) which allows users to store their personal information on a decentralized, but public platform, from drivers’ licenses to back account information.
- The most common cyber security attack is the DDoS attack, which has damaged businesses – data leaks, infectious malware and damaged company reputation. In a DDos attack works with the online service being flooded with fake traffic using Trojans or botnets, which tend to consume most of the bandwidth that is available by the server, due to which real genuine users are denied access. But, these attacks can be dealt with using protection services like Cloudflare which are responsible for controlling the network-level flooding and blocking any traffic from sources of suspicious nature.
It is important for every entrepreneur to realize that cyber security is a very important aspect and enough has to be done for protecting sensitive personal and company information.
